The Nucleus’ Mark Caplice at the Swedish High Coast Songwriting Camp
Uncategorized

We are delighted to have our writer Mark Caplice working with some great talent at The High Coast songwriting camp on the island of Ulvon in Northern Sweden. We are deeply passionate about the quality of Irish songwriting talent and sending our writers abroad to work with other professional writers in different territories is very satisfying. Especially when that territory is Sweden, home to so much pop writing royalty.

Apparently it’s -5 at night. But as my granny always said, gold record keep you warm at night.

The Nucleus is at MIDEM 2018
Uncategorized

We are back on the Cote d’Azur for MIDEM 2018 in Cannes. Last year was very positive, but this year is different. Our catalogue is live, our work is having cultural impact, and our music is in the charts. They say MIDEM ain’t what it used to be, but then neither is the music industry. As a young music publishing company that works pro-actively and with a new model of creative support for our talent, it’s possible that the new MIDEM may suit us more than the old one did. It’s nice to have a strong message and that isn’t drowned out by a high signal to noise ratio.

In the era of Skype, Instagram stories, FaceTime and ubiquitous online presences, there is still nothing like sitting down to share business and musical passions in the real world. It costs a lot more in time, effort and €£$ than a Skype meeting, but as with many things in life; you only get what give. Technology offers convenience, but if we are really honest, that technological convenience often isn’t worth the paper that it is no longer printed on. Face to face, tete a tete, meaningful connections in The Real World. We are very glad to be at MIDEM 2018.

Bringing new Irish songwriting talent to the world
Uncategorized

Today marks a nice landmark in the early life of The Nucleus. It is the first time we have sent writers abroad for co-writes. Mark Caplice, Briony O’Toole and Cian Sweeney flew to the UK last night and will spend the next few days representing The Nucleus in co-writes with the talented writing team at Tileyard Studios, London.

Collaboration is fundamental to our creative model, and we create for a global community. There are many writers coming to work with us in Ireland and we will be sending many writers abroad over the coming years. But today will always be the first 🙂

‘Together’ makes the final. Eurovision becomes The Nucleus’ launchpad
Uncategorized

Ireland has a proud history in the Eurovision, we have won more than every other country; a mighty seven times. But it has been 5 years since we even managed to get beyond the semi-final stage. We are extremely proud that ‘Together,’ a song we created specially for Eurovision, has finally brought Ireland back to where we belong.

‘Together’ is the first song to which we assigned a catalogue position, it is our song number 001. In a nice twist of fate, it also became our first song to make its way to public ears when it was selected by RTE to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2018. RTE showed great faith in our abilities and went with us, a new musical startup, instead of international hired guns, to work with them on both providing the song and the overall production. We are very happy that their trust and faith has been vindicated.

As a songwriting team, creative hub, and publishing company focused on pop music, we are proud that the Eurovision has turned out to be the launchpad for The Nucleus. It was a launchpad that turned out okay for ABBA. Can The Nucleus do for Irish pop songwriting what ABBA did for Swedish pop songwriting? Yes, absolutely.

Thanks to the Irish Times for today’s piece about The Nucleus’ Eurovision 2018 Irish entry
Uncategorized

It was nice to wake up this morning and see The Irish Times’ piece about The Nucleus and our work around Eurovision 2018. Today is the day of Ireland’s semi-final and, in Ryan O’Shaughnessy, we have a great performer who has been winning hearts all over Europe with ‘Together,’ a beautiful pop ballad written purposefully for Eurovision in The Nucleus by Laura Elizabeth Hughes, Mark Caplice and Ryan O’Shaughnessy. Our group is described as The Semi-Final of Death, and anything can happen in a voting competition, but we have a great chance for our song to qualify Ireland into the final for the first time in five years. Tune in tonight and best of luck to team Ireland! 🙂

Thanks to the Independent for today’s interview.
Uncategorized

Many thanks to the Independent and writer Aoife Kelly for publishing the interview I did with them this week. It covers some of my thoughts on the highs and lows of the Irish songwriting scene, my exposure to The (other) Scandinavian Model, Eurovision, and the muso-genetic predecessors that have inspired The Nucleus.

It has been a good month…
Uncategorized

This time one month ago the first song from our catalogue went live and I was wrapping up a very fruitful SXSW 2018. The month since then has been a very busy one, and a very good one. The on switch was flicked and suddenly we have three songs out in the world doing well. Developing and growing a business through its beta phase comes with a great sense of purpose and pride. But The Nucleus exists to make songs, not ball bearings, and nothing is as satisfying as seeing our work in the real world being relished by fans. I particularly enjoyed seeing Ireland’s two biggest TV talk shows each feature artists doing songs by The Nucleus two nights in a row (Ryan O’Shaughnessy performing ‘Together’ on The Late Late Show and Jake Carter performing ‘The Little Things You Do’ on The Ray D’Arcy Show). Another Irish artist with whom we have a song is Damian McGinty, formerly a star on TV show Glee. It was great to see the song ‘Unbelievable,’ which is on his recent EP that jumped into the US iTunes top 10.

Our doors are open. Our songs are out there. Our writers are creating work that is just getting better and better. What do we want? More, more, more.

As we head to SXSW 2018, our work is now live
Uncategorized

It’s an important moment for The Nucleus. Our publishing catalogue is now officially live and our songwriting team and studio spaces are open for business and busy with projects. The first song from our catalogue was debuted to the world yesterday on Irish national broadcaster, RTE. The song, called ‘Together,’ will go on to international release and a live TV performance for 180 million viewers as Ireland’s Eurovision 2018 entry.

Last year The Nucleus attended the international music seminar SXSW 2017 in Austin, Texas to see-what-it’s-all-about. Next week we are back for SXSW 2018 and we are bringing the work of Ireland’s brightest young songwriters. Our work is still in it’s very early days, but we believe our talent and writers will step up to every opportunity and are deeply excited to show what Irish writers can do. We are also very excited about all that Texas BBQ 🙂

The Nucleus is featured in today’s Sunday Business Post piece about Irish start-ups
Uncategorized

It’s a nice Sunday surprise to see that we are featured in today’s Sunday Business Post’s ‘Irish start-ups on the march.’ There are some fantastic start-ups in there and we’re proud to be amongst them. We haven’t actually hit the large figure of 70 signed songwriters as mentioned. Yet.
